This piece* is a visual pun, similar to the type done by schoolgirls (some aged as young as six) in colonial New England. Alphabets are common in samplers, once learned, the letters could be used to mark the household linen. They were worked not only by schoolchildren, but by those in orphanages, as a means of proving they could be taken into service.
